There are several reason why someone would want a higher ranked position at work. Here is my short list:
- New opportunities.
- Increase salary and benefits (e.g. bonus).
- Increase authority.
- Allows additional autonomy.
In order to progress higher in your company you must bring value. How? Fulfilling the needs of others.
Let’s dive into ways to fulfill those needs:
Value is social.
Elevate your status by bringing value to others and this work with become shared, socialized. Your value at work is determined by something or someone outside yourself. This will reverberate to others.
Value is viewed by outward parties, not inward.
Do not focus on self serving needs; rather assist others for growth..
Notice and meet needs.
A person of value notices weaknesses or gaps. When you notice needs but don’t meet needs, you’re a complainer. So once you notice, offer to help.
Value depends on ability.
Compassion is wonderful, but real value happens when you get your hands dirty. Help a team or colleague with a new project or even advise without an expectation of public recognition.
